How Ketoconazole 2% Dusting Powder Works

Ketoconazole belongs to the class of imidazole antifungals and acts by interfering with lanosterol 14α-demethylase (CYP51), which is a cytochrome P450-dependent enzyme involved in the pathway of synthesis of sterols in fungi. Ketoconazole prevents the formation of ergosterol — the main sterol constituent of the cell membrane in fungi — and results in the buildup of poisonous lanosterol precursors. This eventually interferes with the integrity of the membrane in fungi, causing increased permeability and loss of important cellular constituents, eventually leading to growth inhibition (fungistatic) or death (fungicidal, in high concentrations). The powder formulation aids this mechanism by removing the moisture which favours fungal proliferation.

Dosage and Administration
